February 2011: Isle of Man Twitter top 20

12 February 2011 3,126 views 13 Comments

Things are looking decidedly different this month. That’s because I’ve had to dump TweetLevel as the tool to measure Twitter influence.  It’s been on the fritz for several weeks now.  I contacted Edelman (the company behind the tool) about the problem and the reply was that the company is working with Twitter to solve the problem and that they’ll let me know when things are sorted.  But I missed doing the Isle of Man rankings last month and didn’t want to extend the break.

So this month, for first time ever I’ve used Klout as the tool to measure influence.  I didn’t really want to do this because, although Klout is a much-respected tool, it considers Facebook and Twitter into its evaluations. From the Klout site:

The scores range from 1 to 100 with higher scores representing a wider and stronger sphere of influence. Klout uses over 35 variables on Facebook and Twitter to measure true reach, amplification probability, and network score.

So the scores in the right-hand table don’t reflect just Twitter influence, but also take Facebook into account.  And, there are plans afoot to include personal blogs into the Klout score too.

I fear that these tables are now a bit like comparing apples and oranges.  But then again, it’s all just a bit of fun and to show that  just because you are popular on Twitter (Grader) doesn’t mean you have influence (Klout).

To ensure you’re in with a chance of being included in next month’s table, make sure you list your Twitter profile on Twitter Grader and Klout.  Remember, only profiles associated with a human name are included.  That way regular folks are not competing with big brands and news services for visability.

If I’ve made any mistakes or omissions I do apologise.  Please let me know about them and I’ll endeavour to fix it next month.

Kevin Brown has kindly pointed out to me that his profile @merimaat has a Klout score of 51, placeing him comfortably in the top 20 most influential people on Twitter in the Isle of Man. Sorry I missed you Kev, I’ll get you in next month.

    Have I missed anyone else?

signed up with Klout after reading the above. I have a score of 46 so maybe I’ll make next month’s list

I too would be listed if I subscribed to Klout (45), Your post has prompted me to have a look. I didn’t subscribe to Tweetlevel either – and nor will I. What’s the point? I accept that some observers may be interested, but SM is not a competition it’s a conversation. Does the presence and consciousness of ranking tools affect participants behaviour? I suspect it does. I know several tweeps who are focused on building their Klout scores. Where is the conversation when the medium merely becomes a forum for oneupmanship? Like KPI-driven management, the availability of metrics is not necessarily a good thing!

    Cheers, Steve

May I suggest my friend Andrew? http://klout.com/snobiwan

His klout score is rather high. He’s in Ottawa and writes wonderful pieces on theater for a number of blogs and websites.

I’ll add him to the Ottawa charts Don. That will go up next week. Thanks!

My klout score says 33, I must confess to not really understanding any of the measures properly, but it’s interesting to read the reports Sherrilynne and see who I may not be following who has interesting things to say! I’ve never been much of a poster on twitter, I mostly use it as a way to read news and learn about what’s going on in areas I’m interested in.. I saw a comment you made on one of your posts about RTing rather than creating content, when I RT I feel that I am doing two things, 1) letting the author know I found it interesting/good and 2) sharing it with my own followers who may not be following who I am, but I guess that’s the amazing thing about twitter it can be used in so many different ways by different people. As for creating content, I guess I prefer facebook because I am naturally rather wordy ;-) …. anyways keep up the good work, really interesting stuff xxx

Ariel, I totally agree with you about RTs. It’s a compliment to the creator of the content and a hat tip to the tweeter. But I do have a bee in my bonnet that only 22 Twitter feeds are driving Twitter trends. These 22 feeds are mostly mainstream media sites that the rest of the world tweets and retweets. But with millions of tweeps in the mix, why is this so? I think if we all focused a bit more on creation we’d tip the balance of power.

Thanks for the reply Sherrilynne and glad you also see it as a compliment/hat tip, I was getting a little worried I’d picked up some bad netiquette hehe…. Yeah I do completely see your point, and have to say I always assumed when I saw trending topics that they were just aggregated across every post and a true reflection on what words/topics people are tweeting about the most. I do also see your point about content creation, and I am definitely looking at how I use twitter more carefully at present. Funnily enough being one of the lead admins on our new @manxtelecom feed which has only been going a short while, I have already generated a higher klout score, so clearly that model of being very responsive in always replying to tweets and auto thanking people for follows etc is a key part, and that isn’t something I was paying much attention to on my personal feed – I love all this learning I really do! So thank you again, your posts are always read by me, and I realised that I need to tell you that a little more often, that I consume and enjoy and sometimes change :o )

Ariel thanks so much for your kind words. It’s nice to be reassured that peeps do actually like the stuff I keep churning out :-)
