United Way Ottawa really does make change happen. I’ve been a supporter for a few years now, but this year I was delighted to accept a role on the 2012-14 campaign cabinet to help out with marketing and communications.
I figure it’s the very least I can do because I learned a long time ago, the hard way, how having the support of your community can help you change your life. As a teenager, I made some mistakes. As a result I found myself divorced at age 23 and on my own with two babies. It was tough, but with the support of family, friends and my community I was able to go to college, earn a PR diploma and move on to have a rewarding career and a great life. I could never have done this on my own. Community support can change lives.
This year United Way Ottawa’s goal is to change 76,000 lives in our community. To do this we need to raise $21 million.
Last year, donors helped change 66,000 lives by contributing $16.8 million to United Way Ottawa. A further $13.2 million was raised for other charities.
You can see the results of the United Way’s support for yourself; the charity has published data to show how donors’ investments are helping people in the community. Visit United Way’s new Results that Matter microsite at resultsthatmatter.ca.
