This week’s Top 5 social media must-know news includes highlights from Google, Apple, Skype, Twitter and YouTube. I’m using a slightly different format from now on, because I’m finding List.ly’s service a bit too restricting. Let me know in the comments what you think of this more straightforward approach. With no further adieu here’s this week’s top 5!
1. Google gets $5 billion EU antitrust fine.
Google was fined $5 billion by the European Union and ordered to change the way it puts search and web browser apps on Android mobile devices. Google has around $40 billion in sales in banner and video ads outside the U.S. Being forced to surrender its dominance on millions of Android phones will be a game changer for Google.
2. International Emoji Day sees Apple tease Superhero images…and red heads!
July 17 was International Emoji Day and Apple used the occasion to tease a new set of emoji due for release later this year. New emojis include superheros, red heads, fruit, vegetables and lots of other foods.
3. Recording calls to come to Skype
Finally, call recording has come to Skype. Call recording is completely cloud-based, and as soon as users start recording, everyone in the call is notified that the call is being recorded. Call recordings combine everyone’s video as well as any screens shared during the call. This new function will be a boon to podcasters!
4. Twitter’s follower counts plunge
Most Twitter users will have seen a drop in followers this week thanks to a major purge of fake, old and spammy profiles. Twitter removed all locked down accounts this week (personally I saw a drop of 350 followers). The idea is to increase confidence in the platform’s follower counts and trust in the social network overall.
5. Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
I just can’t resist including one of YouTube’s most viral videos of the week…the official trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody, the rock and roll biopic that’s in theatres on November 2nd. Almost 3.4 million views in less than 24 hours. If you love Freddie and the boys (and who doesn’t?!) Watch and enjoy!
