Award winning campaign for EDC

An award winning social media campaign allowed Export Development Canada (EDC) speak to their clients on a different level. They wanted to talk about why small business and entrepreneurs do what they do. Video content anchored the campaign, and a smart social media strategy promoted to great effect.

Kelly RuskKelly Rusk, partner and digital director at Banfield discusses the campaign and why her agency participates in industry awards programs like the IABC Gold Quills.  Click here for the latest episode of the IABC Ottawa’s The Voice podcast.

Podcast: SL’s PR top 5

[audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/sherrilynnestarkie/Octoberpodcast_.mp3]

It’s time for me to get back to podcasting. Well past time.  After a period of crazy, busy change in my life, I’m refocusing my attention back on the blogosphere.  I’ve really missed reading my favourite blogs.  I learn so much from bloggers and so I’m really glad that I can once again spend time in the blogosphere.  Here are some blogs posts and podcasts I particularly enjoyed this week:

  1. FIR #620:  I always learn from Shel and Neville.  I particularly enjoyed their discussion about the social media storm visited upon a shopping mall in Braeside Scotland.  It had me shaking my head, “some organisations will never learn honesty and transparency are crucial to business success”.
  2. Ugh!!’s  Greymatter Honeypot features blogger Owen’s account of his horror story with Beyond Television.  I’m working on a reseach project at work right now about what effect consumer users of social media have on retailers, so I found this post particularly interesting.
  3. Kneale Mann has been blogging for 42 months and has just reached a significant milestone.  In his post, Kneale says that he’s met  hundreds of people he would never had met otherwise in a ten lifetimes. Some have turned into business colleagues, friends and clients.  His experience with social media reflects my own.  Congratulations on 700 blog posts Kneale!
  4. ProBlogger reminds us of 65 ways to drive traffic to your blog. As part of my renewed blogging commitment, I’ve already implemented a few of these tips. I’ve opened up a Scribd account, made sure my blog is listed in online directories and I’m thinking about running a reader competition.  Only 62 more things for me to do! 🙂
  5. Former client Susan Getgood has always been one of my fave bloggers. This week on Marketing Roadmaps she posted her views on bloggers working for free.  She points out that products that people are intrinsically passionate about are few and far between. Certainly far fewer than the number of firms reaching out to bloggers asking them to write about a new product or to attend an event and tweet it up. The takeaway for brands is that need to do their homework and take blogger relations seriously.  Make sure you really understand these individuals and work to make yourself relevant if you hope to build beneficial relationships.

I’ve really enjoyed compiling this list and it’s my aim to do this regularly! Stay tuned.

Super Third Thursday for social media club

The Isle of Man Social Media Club meets the third Thursday of each month and everyone is welcome. smc

On 21 January 2010, we are kicking off the New Year with Super Third Thursday with guest speaker Chief Inspector Mark Payne of the West Midlands Police.

Chief Inspector Mark Payne is responsible for the smooth running of one of the busiest police press and public relations departments in the UK. West Midlands Police is also one of the most progressive in relation to social media use including its aptly named ‘plodcast’ which provides an insight into the work of the force and the varied employment opportunities for police and support staff.

Launched in 2006, the regular and free audio downloads attract more than 20,000 listeners. More recently the force has begun uploading crime prevention advice and behind the scenes videos to YouTube and launched a Facebook site offering news and appeals, videos and crime alerts as part of a wider strategy to reach young people.

CI Payne will discuss the social media campaign, the challenges and successes his team has faced and will be happy to answer questions from the floor.

Social Media Club brings together journalists, publishers, communications professionals, artists, amateur media creators, citizen journalists, teachers, students, tool makers, and other interested collaboraters.

Essentially the people who create and consume media who have an interest in seeing the ‘media industry’ evolve for everyone’s benefit. We are more than just USERS, we are the reason the tools exist – we are the people who communicate our thoughts and ideas near and far. Join us and let’s shape the future together!

PDMS, the Island’s largest software developer has kindly offered to sponsor this event, so it’s free to attend. But it’s bound to be popular so book early to avoid disappointment.

Super Third Thursday will be held at 12.30 at The Claremont Hotel in Douglas.  A finger buffet will be served.

There is no fee to attend but prior booking is advised.  Email smc(at)strivepr.com to reserve your place.

16 July, Third Thursday Social Media Club

Wow, time is racing by!  Next week 16 July is Third Thursday in the Isle of Man and that means that everyone is invited to drop in for lunch with the Social Media Club at Paparazzi on the Promenade in Douglas 12.30 to 14.00.

Anyone who is interested in Twitter, Facebook, blogging, podcasting or any online social web interaction should come along. It’s very casual. Everyone buys their own lunch and we discuss what we’re doing online, what’s new, what’s cool (what’s NOT cool), etc.

The idea is to share news and information and to share what each of has learned.  It’s also really fun to get to actually meet the people we’ve been tweeting with, commenting on and reading about.

There’s no fee to join, no forms to fill out, nothing of the sort.  Just turn up if you can, have a bite to eat and see who you meet.  You’ll definitely learn something new.  Ping me if you can come!

June 10: PR top 5

1. Steve Rubel and his colleagues at Edelman have put together a white paper on the role of search engine visability in reputation management. The main contention is that increasingly, search engines will have a critical impact on how brands are perceived. It’s well worth the read, especially the information regarding the importance of benevolence online.

2. Guy Clapperton takes on Harvard in Twitter Hyped? It seems that Harvard’s research revealed that a huge majority of people have created a Twitter profile and never use it after day.  Guy says that this is normal with new technologies, and predicts that Twitter will, indeed be pervasive.

3. It’s no secret that I’ve recently become fascinated with podcasts. So I was delighted to find Bryan Person’s  The Daily Boo, a short podcast about online communications and media.  This week he spoke to Donna Papacosta about the business of podcasting. She sees the use of podcasting on the rise among corporate clients who benefit from the long tail effect and the power of human voice.

4. I loved this post entitled Why I hate bloggers, not only because it’s a beautiful example of linkbait, but because Lisa Barone is just so wonderfully crabby.  She writes, “A blog won’t make you any less boring, it will just emphasise the fact that you are.”  Ouch! But the comments go on and on.

5. Doug Goldstein has written a funny post about why every marketer should take a journalism class.  Humour aside, he’s right in that marketers should be prepared to dig a little deeper when thinking about what strategies and tactics should be employed.
