The idea of having a social media club sprang up in 2006 in Silicon Valley and the concept spread quickly all around the world with groups of folks interested in the social internet getting together to share knowledge, experience and best practice under the motto: “if you get it, share it”.
We formed the Isle of Man Social Media Club (SMC) in early 2008 and have met on the Third Thursday of each month ever since (with one exception: the week that OwenC and I were both tied up with family …

The Isle of Man International Business School hosts frequent CPD lunch hour sessions and I was pleased to be asked to present an Introduction to Social Media seminar yesterday. We covered the basics: what’s it all about, why is it important and how to get started. People from both the private and public sector came along representing everything from micro-businesses to large enterprises. We had a great discussion which ranged from ‘Why should I bother’, to ‘How to blogs work’ to ‘Where does Facebook fit for my company’. I really …

The Isle of Man Social Media Club meets on the third Thursday of each month for a casual lunch at 12.30 in Paparazzi, Douglas. The Isle of Man Social Media Club had hoped to have a Super Third Thursday in November, but we’ve had a few challenges nailing down our speaker. So there is a slight delay until we have another Super event. But it will be worth it! December is usually pretty busy for most people so we’re looking to schedule it for January now.
We’re still keeping it under wraps for now, but here’s a hint: we’re looking at how the police are using social media to build relationships with young people.
Are there …

We had a capacity crowd come out this week to the Isle of Man Social Media Club‘s Super Third Thursday get together. The focus was on eDemocracy and how the interactive web is changing politics and democracy. Simon Collister, who hails from Ramsey, was our speaker and he gave us a fascinating insight into how the participatory web is rapidly overcoming barriers which made full participatory democracy, as opposed to the representative democracy we have currently, more viable as a political system.
Thirty-eight people attended (a record crowd!) and they had …

The Isle of Man Social Media Club met this week, as it always does on the Third Thursday of each month. Our group is growing and we are seeing lots of ‘just curious’ folks coming out now. No doubt this week’s Twitter exploits by Ms Winfrey and Mr Kutcher will help in spreading the social media word. Thanks to everyone who came out. We’re trying to get a Super ThirdThursday organised for May so watch this space. Enjoy the video below and know that I’m available as a videographer for …
