Which social network would you quit?

If you had to quit one social network, which would it be?  This is my most-answered Facebook question ever posed with 57 people taking the time to register a vote.

Unfortunately for Pinterest, the newest platform of all is the one that folks say they would quit first, with 22 people singling it out.
Next comes the much-maligned Google+ with 14 people willing to leave it in the dust.
Perhaps surprising, Facebook!  Six people would leave the most popular of social networks.
Five would kick Twitter to the curb.
Four would shirk LinkedIn.
Three would leave …

This infographic describes the top trends on Twitter last year. It’s a snapshot of popular and youth culture. It’s probably an accurate reflection of users’interests; interesting that there are no major brands mentioned (other than sport).

New Twitter

By now most Twitter users have checked out the ‘new’ Twitter.  It’s taken me a few days because I hardly ever use Twitter’s own platform; I rely on Tweetdeck and TweetCaster. So I was curious to see what everybody is talking about.
The very first thing you notice is a completely new landing page. It’s not ‘Twitter blue’; it’s an orangey-red colour and has a picture of people playing cricket.  Odd.
The timeline includes rich media and key information embedded into tweets, there is a new tool to track @  and # …

Three biggest myths of social media

The three biggest myths of social media marketing include that it’s free, it’s fun and it’s for everyone.
Yes, social media platforms such as wordpress.com, Facebook and Twitter are free to use, but it takes considerable time and effort to gain traction. Therefore it’s only free if you place no value on time and expertise.
Yes, social media is fun for individuals. Facebook is a great way to keep up on family news and communicate with friends. But, as industry user statistics  show, for companies and organisations, social media engagement is an …

Skills: another new LinkedIn feature

LinkedIn has just launched another new feature: Skills.  It allows people to search for a specific skill among the millions of profiles.  It really enhances the search facility by allowing users to find key people within that community, locations, related companies, relevant jobs and relevant groups.
This new feature is still in beta, and it marks an important new iteration for the professional networking platform. Now searchers get contextual information that is really, really useful.
It’s easy to use. Just login and go to the LinkedIn Skills page.  Search for a skill …

December 2010: Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

This is the last Ottawa ranking of the year and there are  few new comers and a few familiar names have slipped off.  This month we welcome @suzemuse and @bambiblue to the popularlity listing.  We bid adieu to @denvan and @michael_gr!
The influence list generally scored lower across the board.  Is this because people are not at work as much in December?  Or are they just distracted with all the holiday shenanigans?  We welcome @suzemuze and @amandadegrace.  We say goodbye to @TheStacey and @davidweedmark.
These lists are just as a bit …

Blocking competitors on Twitter: total folly

Image via Wikipedia

Companies blocking competitors from following a Twitter feed in the hopes of gaining a commercial edge are kidding themselves.  And it’s clear that the company doesn’t really ‘get; the whole ethos of  social networks, so one might wonder why it bothers at all.
Let me explain.  In terms of Twitter’s site features and functions, blocking an individual follower does very little to stop him from seeing your updates.  From Twitter’s FAQs:
Blocked users are unable to add your Twitter account to their lists, and we will not deliver any …
