You know, not a week goes by that I don’t hear from someone who’s interested in getting a start in PR and is wondering what it’s all about. So I thought it might be helpful to create a seminar that will answer many of the questions I hear time and again.
It occurred to me that we might as well, at the same time, offer some help and pointers for people in business who are not PR specialists but find themselves involved in doing PR for their employer or their own …

Social media is cheap, if not free
Anyone can do it
You can make a big splash in a short time
You can do it all in-house
If you do something great, people will find it

Fourteen people have confirmed that they will be attending the Isle of Man Social Media Club ThirdThursday meet up on 20 November. Nine more have said maybe! It seems that this idea is gaining momentum.

I’ve been to dozens of awards dinners over the years and on the whole they are generally either very tedious affairs or very boozy parties, depending on whether you’ve won an award.
Last night I had the opportunity to attend the Awards for Excellence gala in Douglas, Isle of Man. This was not your run of the mill awards ceremony. In true Manx style, Isle of Man Newspapers made their event a real fun night out. It didn’t matter if you were a winner or not, you were glad to be …

A couple of sleepless nights means that I’ve had time to catch up on my reading. Here’s some stuff I really liked.
1. Some excellent advice for PR newbies from Matthew Stibbe. Don’t ring and say, ‘Did you get the press release?’ Sound familiar anyone?
2. More good advice. How to write headlines that pop, from Flack’s Revenge.
3. Leo explains to company directors what social media can do for them.
4. Todd Defren explains why sacking the PR agency to save money during tough times is such a bad idea.
5. Seth Godin explains …

Last evening, after a pretty trying day, I spoiled myself by sitting down in a quiet room and reading the newspaper. For someone who usually only finds time to scan a website, it was a real treat. The Isle of Man Examiner is still published as a broadsheet, and I spread the pages out and thoroughly enjoyed myself as I ruffled and turned them and took in stories of every description from all over the Island.
You don’t often get to see a 36 point headline …

How do newspapers choose which case studies make their pages? What’s the difference between pitching a feature to the FT and a column to the Mailon Sunday?
