February 2012: Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

After a brief absence (December and January) the Ottawa Twitter top 20 makes its return. I started doing these tables over a year ago to illustrate how being popular (Grader) on Twitter doesn’t necessarily mean you have influence (TweetLevel).   Over time many of the names have changed, established handles have slipped and new ones enter the fray. Both lists are always in a state of flux.
But do these tables tell the popular/influence story?  TweetLevel changed its algorithym a few months back; and it seems that Grader must have done so …

November 2011: Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

One thing is for certain, Twitter Grader is a lot more volatile than Tweetlevel.  This month the left column has changed significantly from last month, with many new players added and lots of familiar names dropped altogether.  However, the right column, the measure of influence, sees many of the same names as in month’s past. Is this because popularity is fleeting and influence is enduring?  You tell me.
To get in with a chance to be on next month’s ranking be sure you get your Twitter profile listed on Twitter Grader …

Podcast: SL’s PR top 5 on Klout

There’s been a lot of discussion about Klout and its new algorythm lately.  People were unsurprisingly a little miffed to wake up one morning to find their Klout score had dropped 20 points overnight.  I was a little upset about it myself, I have to admit.  Here’s a selection of views from around the blogoshere which illustrates a range of views:

In a guest post on Neville Hobson’s blog, Tammy Kahn Fennel of MarketMeSuite says that Klout is getting a bum rap and is spitefully pilloried.  She writes, “…from where I’m …

October 2011 Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

What a difference a month makes!  October sees significant change to the Twitter Popularity side of the table as many long-time residents have slipped off the charts completely. That makes room for newcomers @facingthestreet, @nicnanos, @peggymccoll, @atifmizaemax, @stphnmaher and @ryanishype.  Congrats to you all.
However none of these newcomers have made the grade when it comes to Twitter influence. So I ask you, what’s more important on Twitter. Popularity? Influence?
My answer to this question is probably neither.  What’s really important about participating on Twitter is the value each person derives from …

August 2011: Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

Here’s this month’s Ottawa’s Twitter top 20 rankings. Things in the left-hand column have changed slightly with some new entries and Kelly Rusk pushing me out of the second-place position. Things on the right have changed too.  Overall scores are higher ranging from 72.3 to 86.6; last month’s range was 66.7 to 83.8.  The reason for this change?  Well, there are some new profiles listed which are pushing things up.  And perhaps individuals are using the lazy days of summer to interact with their Twitter communities more?
I first started doing …

July 2011: Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

There are lots of movers and changes on this month’s Ottawa’s Twitter top 20.  Twitter grader has introduced an Ottawa Elite ranking that I used instead of just checking the geographic list.  This has introduced a number of new profiles to the left hand side of the table (popularity).  It makes me wonder if Grader looks only follower count but I don’t see anything on the website to indicate there’s been any change. All the profiles listed here score 100% on Twitter Grader.
On the right side we see the return …

June 2011: Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

I’ve not done these lists for a few months now; it’s about time for another. The reason I do them from time to time is just to see how popularity and influence online can be quite different. That said, these lists are not without their own flaws, despite my best efforts to be objective.  The influence one is particulary challenging because Klout does not rank be geography.  So I’ve checked the Klout ranking of all the the top 20 listed  on the Grader popularity score…then I mixed in the names …

Finding value in Klout-like sites

There is value to be had from services like Klout and PeerIndex, but users believe that value is limited, according to a survey this wee
I asked those in my Facebook community, “Do you find value in influence benchmarking tools like Klout and PeerIndex,” and the responses proved interesting.
Sites such as Klout, PeerIndex and TweetLevel provide social media analytics that measure users’ influence across their social network. These services look at various metrics such as the size of a network, the content created and how people interact with that content to …

March 2011: Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

These lists are couple of days late, so I’m sneaking them in under the wire.  Once again they are a stark reminder that just because you are popular doesn’t necessarily mean that you have influence. That said, even the influence measured here has limited real-life relevance.  For example a person might only have five followers, but if they are all members of parliament, you could rightfully say the guy has considerable influence.
These tables are just a bit of competitive fun. To ensure you’re in with a chance of being …
