July 2011: Ottawa’s Twitter top 20

There are lots of movers and changes on this month’s Ottawa’s Twitter top 20.  Twitter grader has introduced an Ottawa Elite ranking that I used instead of just checking the geographic list.  This has introduced a number of new profiles to the left hand side of the table (popularity).  It makes me wonder if Grader looks only follower count but I don’t see anything on the website to indicate there’s been any change. All the profiles listed here score 100% on Twitter Grader.
On the right side we see the return …

February 2011: Ottawa Twitter top 20

Things are looking decidedly different this month. That’s because I’ve had to dump TweetLevel as the tool to measure Twitter influence.  It’s been on the fritz for several weeks now.  I contacted Edelman (the company behind the tool) about the problem and the reply was that the company is working with Twitter to solve the problem and that they’ll let me know when things are sorted.
So this month, for first time ever I’ve used Klout as the tool to measure influence.  I didn’t really want to do this …

February 2011: Isle of Man Twitter top 20

Things are looking decidedly different this month. That’s because I’ve had to dump TweetLevel as the tool to measure Twitter influence.  It’s been on the fritz for several weeks now.  I contacted Edelman (the company behind the tool) about the problem and the reply was that the company is working with Twitter to solve the problem and that they’ll let me know when things are sorted.  But I missed doing the Isle of Man rankings last month and didn’t want to extend the break.
So this month, for first time ever …

I was chuffed when earlier this week I was included in the PR Top 100 according to Edelman’s Tweetlevel.
Crowdsurfing author David Brain explains Tweetlevel on his blog: “Yet again we brutalise complex human concepts like trust, popularity, influence and engagement with our over-simplistic (but pretty bloody clever) algorithms.”
In the post’s comments, there’s a lengthy debate between digital sociologist  Brian Solus and the man behind Tweetlevel Jonny Bentwood among others.  The disagreement surrounds the accuracy and relevance of the algorithms and the definition of  ‘influence’.
But for me the debate is beside …

I’ve just booked to attend the Don’t Panic Guide to Social Media conference taking place in London 23 May at the Regents Park Marriott. The one-day conference has a great line up of speakers: Sam Barratt of Oxfam, Kerry Bridge of Dell,  Robin Goad of  Hitwise, Graham Goodkind of Frank PR, Marshall Manson of Edelman,  Meg Pickard of the Guardian and Simon Wakeman of Medway Council will all be on hand.
Best of all I may finally get to meet Stephen Davies of WebITPR and Neville Hobson, of the FIR podcast, …

Things are starting to settle down now, and I’m getting back into the swing of blogging. Here are my faves from this week:
1. The top ten reasons why PR doesn’t work. Guy Kawasaki features a list compiled by Margie Zable Fisher. She seems to place a lot of blame on the client. Agencies should put their hands up too. How about “agencies bring in the big stars to win the account and then staff it with inexperienced PR novices”. Or, “agencies under bid the …

Primo PR blogger Steve Rubel is calling on people in the blogosphere to stop all the sniping and nastiness. Of course it would be delightful if this could be achieved, but it’s highly unlikely. What Steve asks people to do is to go against human nature…and that’s never going to happen.
I have to admit I am often taken aback by the some of the high school stuff that goes on. Last year, Strumpette appeared on the scene taking pot shots at Steve, among others. I think …

Is it just me?!  Does anyone think now is the time for Edelman to be issuing a report on the trustworthiness of bloggers?
Brand Republic is reporting the findings of an Edelman study conducted in the Asia-Pacific region. No doubt the research is sound and the report, fascinating.
Maybe it is just me, but I think the timing sucks in light of the recent Walmart flog scandal. I’ve kept my opinions to myself throughout the scandal cycle because I thought everyone else had it pretty much covered.  But this is too much!
Who else thinks Richard could …

It hasn’t escaped me that today is actually the 14 October.  Honestly, I completely forgot about the weekly top 5 yesterday. Sorry folks. Here they are…only one day late.
1. Shel Holtz talks about why and how Edelman has blown it AGAIN with the Walmart blogging strategy.  And, now they’ve all but disappeared. Sheesh!  You’d think a recognised global leader in social media could it right once in a while?
2.  The Ante Up! blog has a good conversation going on about what Isle of Man-based NETELLER is doing to cope with the new US …
