Real beauty sketches: cynical marketing ploy?

Telling a compelling story is the key to getting content shared across social networks, extending reach, increasing visibility and thereby creating awareness.
Dove’s ‘Real Beauty Sketch’ video is a perfect example.  As part of Dove’s ongoing “Campaign for Real Beauty.” this Internet-only commercial shows a forensic sketch artist drawing women, as they describe how they look from behind a screen. Then he draws a second sketch of each woman, as they are described by someone who had only just met them. The two sketches are then seen displayed side by side; …

Viral video: Jim Carrey’s take on gun control

Canadian comedic actor Jim Carrey has taken aim at America’s gun laws and the late Charleton Heston, former National Rifle Association (NRA) president with a satirical Internet video, “Cold Dead Hands’.
Done in the style of classic country western variety show “Hee Haw!”, the video features Carrey as the lead singer with Lonesome Earl and The Clutterbusters, a country band.  The song mocks Heston, insinuating his love of guns was fuelled by the need to compensate for his sexual inadequacy.
According to Oxford Dictionary, the purpose of satire is to use humour …

My Superbowl moment

My agency, Thornley Fallis Communications was part of the global launch of BlackBerry 10 last week.  We produced a raft of videos for use online to support the launch, one of which ran on cbs.com during the Superbowl. It wasn’t until the day after I was aware that it featured my Twitter profile.  Ah fame. So fleeting.

Somebody that I used to know

Chances are you’ve heard Gotye‘s song a time or two.  You might be aware of the hundreds of  amateur covers that have sprung up on YouTube.  Songwriter Gotye knows about them too.  So he’s created his own YouTube sensation: ‘Somebodies’.
When Gotye posted his video on YouTube, he wrote, “Reluctant as I am to add to the mountain of interpretations of ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ seemingly taking over their own area of the Internet, I couldn’t resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of …

International Women’s Day 2012 — Are we really equals?

‘M’ asks 007…are we really equals?  Until the answer is yes..we must never stop asking.

The two-minute short, specially commissioned for International Women’s Day, sees 007 star Daniel Craig undergo a dramatic makeover as he puts himself, quite literally, in a woman’s shoes.
Directed by acclaimed ‘Nowhere Boy’ director/conceptual artist Sam Taylor-Wood, scripted by Jane Goldman (‘Kick Ass’) and featuring the voice of Dame Judi Dench reprising her role as ‘M’, the film will be screened in cinemas and streamed online in a bid to highlight the levels of inequality that persist …

Casey Anthony’s video PR stunt

Effecting a reputation recovery for Casey Anthony, the Florida mother who was acquitted of charges that she murdered her daughter Caylee, is a PR challenge that few would rush to undertake. One of most-hated people in America, reforming Casey could be an impossible task. However, I don’t agree.  I believe there is every chance that she will find a way to leverage her notoriety to make a very good living as a result.
It seems an initial shot was fired over the bow yesterday when Casey’s personal video diary was ‘leaked’ …
