Does PR own social media?

It looks like public relations and advertising agencies are starting to see social media generate some revenue and see it as a growth strategy for 2011.
A joint study from the Transworld Advertising Agency Network and Worldcom Public Relations Group surveyed practitionners at 25 advertising agencies and 25 PR agencies in January 2011 on how effectively the industry is using social media. The groups found fees from social media made up a greater percentage of overall revenues in 2011 for both types of agencies.
In 2010, 28% of PR agencies reported that …

The UK’s top 25 tech PRs on Twitter

Jack Schofield, former tech editor for the FT and now blogging for tech site ZDnet.co.uk, has put together his list of the top 25 tech PRs on Twitter, using PeerIndex as scores as his basis.
“Whether you consider them friends or enemies, these are the people who are behind the marketing of technology products in the UK, and while they are usually invisible, Twitter brings them out into the open: it’s where, to some extent, they make their skills visible and put their reputations on the line, ” writes Jack on …

Happy 5th blog birthday to me!

I was five long years ago that I wrote my first ever post here and in remarking on this, I feel a sense of achievment but also a sense of sadness at how quickly time passes.  A lot has happened since I wrote my Welcome! post.
Five years, 912 posts, 1,527 comments 1,456 spams, three skins later and I’m still blogging.
Originally, my hope had been the blog would help the handful of PR freelancers I was working with “to interact among ourselves and with the outside world of PR, marketing …

Boiler plate
Blue sky thinking
Cross pollination/fertilisation
Digital native/immigrant
Grey beard
Heads up
Holding the ring
Moving forward
Quick and dirty
Reach out
Seed, share or amplify

PR boss blows it on telly

In watching last week’s BBC documentary on social class the irony of seeing the head of a top British public relations agency Modus  Publicity get raked over the coals by reporter Richard Bilton did not escape those of us in the business.
According to PR Week, Julian Vogel, Modus’ director ‘inadvertently played a starring role’ in the documentary.  In it, the PR pro was forced to admit that his firm employed up to 20 staff working as unpaid interns at any one time.
You’d think the head of a top PR agency …

Deloitte’s 2011 social network predictions

In 2011,  social networks are likely to surpass one billion unique members, according to a report by international consultant Deloitte.  Also, they may deliver more than 2 trillion advertisements.
However the data shows that advertising revenues directly attributable to social networks may remain relatively modest compared to other media.  With per member annual advertising revenue of about $4, that implies total 2011 advertising revenues of about $5 billion.
This is a divisive issue. Some people see social networking as the technology sector’s “next big thing” that will overtake search advertising. Others take …

December 2010: Isle of Man Twitter’s top 20

This is the final league table for this, the year that Twitter really took off in the Isle of Man. I’m tracking about 500 Island profiles, but I’m sure there are probably a lot more. Funnily enough some of the  names that were on the top of  the first ever Twitter popularity table (February 2010) still rank highly.  And, there are plenty of newcomers too.  The same can be said of the influence table.
This month, we have two brand new entrants onto the popularity list. Congratulations to @alexharrissm and @annagoldsmith! …

Social media is top of the PR priority list,  according to a survey conducted by software company Vocus and researcher Deirdre Breakenridge.  A report entitled, Social Media Comes of Age is based on a survey of 508 PR and marketing professionals, was released this week.
