The all new Foursquare
Foursquare has been around for a few years and has always been a bit of location-based fun. Users ‘checked in’ at places they had visited to compete with friends for points and, very occasionally, get free products and services. The social network boasts a community of 20 million users, but never really seemed to go mainstream. But that’s set to change with yesterday’s relaunch of the ‘All new Foursquare‘.
The main change is the shift in focus away from ‘checking in’ to sharing recommendations and insights (but you can still check in if you want to). The new mobile app showcases swipeable photos, tips, lists and friends’ places. Also there are new ‘like’ and comment features á la Facebook.
Now Foursquare lets users explore in ways. It provides ideas about where to go based on the user’s current location and will show friends that are nearby. It gives information on specials, sales and promotions and recommendations in the immediate area. The social networks says that the discovery features are customised to each user based on his or her check in history and those of friends.
The new app allows users to browse popular categories or find specific information such as nearby free WiFi points, too.
This isn’t just a new version, it’s a whole new app. And new Foursquare promises innovations and features to come soon. Foursquare has always been fun to use, let’s see how the relaunch will change things.

Since the new release of Foursquare, has it changed in Canada in terms of specials in sales? To be more specific, are businesses using Foursquare to set up sales and specials?
Last time I used Foursquare in Ottawa I found few businesses using the sales and specials feature.
Let me know what you think
Iain, my experience in Ottawa is similar to yours. I use Foursquare because it’s fun and I like to see my friends reviews etc. But I can’t remember ever being offered a sale or a anything for chequing in. Might with worth doing a survey on this.
Sherrilynne, slightly off topic: I know that if you have an AMEX and in the states when you check in you can get very special deals because your card is tied to your check ins. For example, they have a Local Sundays where local purchases are encouraged.
Perhaps if more local businesses used things like Foursquare, Google local and Facebook places to encourage check ins they may see more people doing the brick and mortar thing.
Agreed. I had thought they would have caught on by now.
@sherrilyne It is too bad that it hasn’t caught on more. I would like to more local businesses trying out these things.
Let’s start blogging about it more to see if anyone will listen!
